I almost didn't post this. LinkedIn shows about three lines before "β¦ more". Everything after that has to earn the click. So put the hook first: β’ say the result β’ skip the warm-up β’ make line 3 a reason to keep reading Paste your draft here and watch where the fold lands.
LinkedIn post preview for desktop and mobile
LinkedIn's post box shows your whole draft, so you only find out where the feed cuts it after you publish. Paste your text here to see it as a feed post first, at a desktop width and a phone width.
Feed preview
The whole post shows without "β¦ more".
What the preview shows
The preview draws your post the way it appears in the feed: an avatar, a name and headline, your text at feed size, and the like, comment, repost and send buttons underneath. Hashtags, @mentions and links show in link colour. A link in your text adds a link card with the domain and a title guessed from the address, because Postfold doesn't fetch the page.
Where the "β¦ more" cut falls
In the feed LinkedIn shows about three lines of a post, then "β¦ more". So the cut is about lines, not a fixed number of characters. A short first line still uses up a whole line, and so does an empty line between paragraphs: a post that opens with three one-line sentences shows less text than one that opens with a full paragraph. Under the preview, Postfold tells you how many characters make it above the cut.
Desktop and mobile cut in different places
A phone fits fewer words on a line than a desktop feed, so the same three lines hold less of your post. Switch the preview between Desktop and Mobile. If your hook only lands on the wider screen, tighten the opening until it works on both; when you can only fit one, plan for the narrower screen.
What it can't tell you
Fonts and screen sizes vary, so treat the cut as a close guide rather than a promise. Your real name and headline are replaced with placeholders, which doesn't move the cut, since only the text is clamped. And a preview can't predict reach: how many people see the post is up to LinkedIn and your readers.
Questions
How accurate is the preview?
Close, not exact. Postfold sets your text at the feed text size and measures it at a desktop and a phone feed width. Fonts and screen sizes differ between devices, so a word or two can land on the other side of the cut.
Can I preview a post with an image, a document or a poll?
No. The preview shows text posts, plus a link card when your text contains a link.
Do I need to sign in or connect my LinkedIn account?
No. The preview runs in your browser with a placeholder name and headline, and your text is never sent to our server.
Does previewing use up my free formats?
No. Only applying a style or a list counts toward the 5 free formats. Typing, previewing, switching between desktop and mobile, and copying are always free.
